Prambanan is the largest Hindu-Javanese temple complex in Indonesia. Prambanan means ‘many priests’. In the reliefs, they are depicted with long beards. Prambanan is located in Central Java. The complex has three main temples, the largest of which is 47 meters high and dedicated to Shiva. South of this temple is the temple dedicated to Brahma, and north of it, to Vishnu.
Construction of the temple complex began around 850 AD. Shortly after its completion, the complex was abandoned and fell into disrepair. The plateau of the central complex was only excavated in 1893. Reconstruction of the complex began in 1918 and is still ongoing.
