Innere Stadt (Inner City) is the historical center of Vienna. Until the city boundaries were expanded in 1850, the Innere Stadt was congruent with the city of Vienna. Traditionally it was divided into four quarters, which were designated after important town gates: Stubenviertel (northeast), Kärntner Viertel (southeast), Widmerviertel (southwest), Schottenviertel (northwest).
Part of the Innere Stadt is the Hofburg, the former Imperial Palace. Nearby you will also find the National Library, Heldenplatz, two beautiful parks, and the impressive Michaelerplatz, Stephansplatz and the St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Also a lot of museums are in the vicinity, like the Albertine and the sister museums of Art History and Natural History. On the Ringstrasse you will find numerous sights such as the University, the Rathaus (City Hall), and the Parliament, to name but a few.
