Chemainus Valley, Vancouver Island, British Colombia, Canada

Chemainus is a town on the east coast of Vancouver Island in the province of British Columbia, Canada. the village is located in the Cowichan Valley district. The originally logging village was founded in 1858. Nowadays the village of Chemainus is especially famous for its 39 outdoor murals. This outdoor exhibition gave a new economic boost to the village.

The name ‘Chemainus’ comes from an ancient indigenous shaman and prophet ‘Tsa-meeun-is’ (broken chest). Legend has it that the man survived a large wound in his chest to become a great leader among his people.
