Appingedam is a city and former municipality in the Netherlands in the province of Groningen. The town of Appingedam, located on the Damsterdiep, was considered the main town of Fivelingo until the 19th century. It has been the only place in the Ommelanden with city rights since the Middle Ages. The center of the Appingedam has been a protected cityscape since 1972.
