Verona, Italy

Verona is a city on the River Adige in Veneto, Italy and is the largest city municipality in the region and in northeastern Italy. Verona preserved many ancient Roman monuments in the early Middle Ages, but many of its early medieval edifices were destroyed or heavily damaged by the earthquake of 3 January 1117. Verona is famous for its Roman amphitheater, the Arena, found in the city’s largest piazza, the Piazza Bra. There is also a variety of other Roman monuments to be found in the town, such as the Roman theatre of Verona. Another Roman landmark is the Ponte di Pietra (‘Stone Wall Bridge’). Two of William Shakespeare’s plays are set in Verona: Romeo and Juliet and The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
