Borg Verhildersum, Leens, Groningen, The Netherlands

Borg Verhildersum is an estate directly east of the village of Leens in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen.

The name is derived from the name ‘Verhildert’, where Ver stands for ‘woman, noble lady’ and Hilde(rt) was the proper name. However, it is unknown when this woman lived. The ending ‘-um’ in Verhildersum stands for ‘home, house’, just like for example in Fraeylemaborg.

The borg initially dates from the 14th century, but it took until the early 17th century before it became a ‘borg’. Today the estate is managed as a museum and is partly furnished in 19th century style. Surrounding the borg is the borg garden with a coach house, treasure house and garden gazebo.
