Monteriggioni is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in Italy. It’s located on the Monte Ala hill and built by the Sienese between 1214–1219 as a front line against Florence. During the conflicts between Siena and Florence in the Middle Ages, the city was strategically placed as a defensive fortification. It withstood many attacks from the Florentines but it was not until 1554 that the fortress fell into the hands of the enemies of Siena due to betrayal. After that Siena was conquered as well.
