Mount Bromo (Gunung Bromo) is an active volcano and part of the Tengger massif in East Java, Indonesia. The mountain is with it’s height of 2.329 metres not the highest peak but it is the most well known. Mount Bromo sits, together with 2 other volcanos, in the middle of a vast plain called the ‘Sea of Sand’.
The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god. The massif area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. A popular activity is to watch the sunrise from the viewpoint on Gunung Penanjakan (Mount Penanjakan) and then take a tour to the volcano.
